MURP: Housing, Community & Economic Development Specialization
Local and regional organizations have long worked to develop their economies and employment opportunities while enhancing the social and living conditions of their communities. The housing, community and economic development specialization provides students with the background knowledge, analytical perspectives, and methodological skills that enable them to assist effectively in the formulation and implementation of public and private policies relating to socio-economic development at the local, metropolitan, and regional scales. Two options are available to students within this concentration:
- Economic Development
- Community Development
Economic Development focuses on theoretical foundations and practical policies and actions for increasing economic activity in an area to improve levels of income and employment. Community Involvement and Development emphasizes processes intended to enhance citizen participation in local decisionmaking and to improve socio-economic conditions. Students select from courses within the department, as well as courses in Agricultural and Applied Economics, Sociology, and Economics. Graduates of the economic and community development concentration have found employment with local and regional planning agencies; state and federal agencies; specialized economic development, community development, and redevelopment organizations; private development and consulting firms, and non-profit organizations.
