Sustainable Development of Forestlands Project
Cluster Development Examples
These developments have been planned using a clustered housing design in order to conserve large open areas in perpetuity.
Local Examples:
- Shadowlake Village - Blacksburg, Virginia
- Village at Tom's Creek - Blacksburg, Virginia
Other Examples in the United States:
- EcoVillage - Loudoun County, Virginia
Over 85 percent of the 180 acre site is in permanent open space. EcoVillage lots range in size from approximately 1/3 to 3/4 acre, and will be built in two 25-unit clusters of single-family rural hamlet lots. Roughly 20 acres of the property are in established forest, with over 11,000 trees planted in a reforestation effort. Organic agriculture is a primary activity. Creating energy efficient homes is a very high priority. - Prairie Crossing - Libertyville and Grayslake, Illinois
Over 60 percent of the 677-acre site is protected open land that is actively used by people and wildlife. It has 36 condominiums and 359 single-family homes. Prairie Crossing has sold over 95% of its 359 single-family homes. The community was designed to combine responsible development, the preservation of open land and easy commuting by rail. Several amenities were developed such as a certified organic farm that provides homeowners with views over cultivated fields of vegetables and flowers and a seasonal on-site Farm Market. - Coffee Creek Center - Chesterton, Indiana. Coffee Creek Center is a more than 640-acre project in Northwest Indiana slated for up to 2,000 residential units and over 3 million square feet of commercial, office and retail space. The project’s centerpiece is a more than 180-acre public conservation district.
