Grant
funds from the Virginia Department of Forestry have enabled our interdisciplinary
project team to explore ways to encourage economically, socially,
and ecologically sound subdivision developments in mountainous areas
throughout Virginia.
Project goals include providing education and information for landowners,
developers, planners, designers, engineers, and other interested parties
-- and helping communities and individuals within Virginia to sustain
productive intact farms and forests, minimize habitat fragmentation,
retain high-quality views and water quality, and protect valued human
resources.
This Sustainable Development of Forestlands Project illustrates the
advantages of conservation-based design by learning from subdivision
developments implemented with the intent to be "environmentally
sound" as well as other conventional subdivision developments.
