The doctoral program in Planning, Governance & Globalization is a spin-off from the Environmental Design and Planning (EDP) Ph.D. Program in the
Initiated in 1975, the EDP program has grown not only in enrollment but also in specializations or streams as the college has become more diverse through restructuring. However, a single umbrella degree serving such an increasing number of disparate subdisciplines has been problematic in a functional sense and less attractive to students who seek a more appropriately titled degree.
As part of this reconfiguration, SPIA’s spin-off degree is called “Planning, Governance and Globalization.” It combines two of the streams from EDP, the “Planning stream” now referred to as the “Urban and Environmental Design and Planning track” (UEDP) administered by Urban Affairs and Planning and the “Public and International Affairs” now referred to as the “Governance and Globalization track” (GG) administered by Government and International Affairs.
Within the two tracks are several thematic areas:
Urban & Environmental Design & Planning:
- Metropolitan Development; Community & Economic Development Planning
- International Development Planning; Environmental Planning & Landscape Analysis
- Transportation Planning; Physical Planning & Urban Design
Governance & Globalization:
-
Governance, Institutions & Civil Society; Globalization, Identities, Security, & Economies
