MURP: International Development Planning Specialization
The international development planning specialization provides multidisciplinary graduate training in the theories, analytic methods, and practical skills required for working effectively in developing nations. Programmatic offerings are especially strong in international development and environment. Typically, about one-fifth of the Masters students enrolled in the Urban Affairs and Planning program are from developing countries. Numerous North American students specialize in International Development as well, including a growing number of recent Peace Corps volunteers. Program graduates pursue careers within public and private agencies engaged in international development planning and policy. These include consulting firms, lending institutions, advocacy groups, universities, non-profit organizations and private businesses.
The international development concentration may be taken by graduate students in either the Master of Urban and Regional Planning or Master of Urban Affairs programs. The concentration has been designed to meet the specific career interests of students through individualized programs of study. Graduate students electing the international development concentration enroll in a series of introductory, seminar, elective and studio courses. Over 50 internationally oriented courses are offered through the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning and other departments including Forestry, Agricultural Economics, Political Science, Geography, Sociology, Economics, Women's Studies, and Human Health and Nutrition. Students may choose to focus on one of the following areas.
- Urban and Regional Development
- Environmental and Natural Resource Planning
