GRADUATE DEGREES

Application Process

Students may request application materials or apply online through the Graduate Schoolwebsite.

In addition to the application, send the following materials to the Graduate School:

  1. Report of the GRE General Test (and TOEFL, if applicable); Virginia Tech's code is #005859. The Graduate School requires official test scores sent directly from ETS.
  2. Official academic transcripts from the college or university where you received your undergraduate degree, along with any graduate work you have completed. If you transferred to another institution, the only transcript required is the one that shows the degree conferment.

Graduate School

Please submit the following materials to the Urban Affairs and Planning Program:

  1. Three letters of recommendation (only two required if you are a Virginia Tech undergraduate); these may also be submitted online.
  2. Official academic transcripts
  3. Resume and Personal Statement

Applicants may use the space provided in the online application for their resume. The online application form will ask you to state your reasons for pursuing a graduate degree; this section may be used as the personal statement.

Please do not submit high school or other similar degree information, honors, or awards.

Send Blacksburg campus application materials to:

If you are applying to the National Capital Region Campus (NCR), all application materials should be sent to that address. The Blacksburg campus does not review any applications for NCR, and submitting materials to the wrong campus will hold up the application review.

Send NCR campus application materials to:

Alexandria, VA 22314

Academic Standards

Students applying to the MURP program should meet the following academic standards:

  1. Cumulative GRE score of 1100
  2. A "B" overall grade point average (3.1 on a 4 point scale)
  3. 213 TOEFL (104 of internet-based tests; 550 of paper-based tests) (Not required of US permanent residents or US naturalized citizens; can be waived by the Graduate School if student attended a university where English is the language of instruction)

Deadlines

While there is no actual deadline, the Graduate Admissions Committee begins to review applications in early February, so students who wish to be considered for graduate assistantships should submit their applications before this time. Graduate Assistantship decisions are made by March 1.
